It all started in a Rolleston garage in 2010 with a small, self-engineered homebrew kit and an ambitious Yorkshire man. Within a short space of time Dave was eager to abandon the 9 – 5 daily grind and become a full time commercial craft brewer, with the ultimate dream being to open his own brewpub. After obtaining a customs controlled license he was selling a mere 50 litres of all grain beer each week to a handful of bars in Christchurch and Wellington. The Eagle had hatched…In 2011 big batch brewing became possible via contract brewing which allowed Eagle to grow and reach more of the national market. This growth paved the way for the opening of a joint brewery project in suburban Christchurch mid-2013. Dave quit his full time job in Engineering and with the help and support of his partner Marilyn the brewery capacity doubled in size by 2015 and again in 2017. It was at that time the realisation of the brewpub dream became a true possibility and Eagle looked towards future growth.A chance passing of the Kaiapoi Township planted a seed and a vision started to sprout. An empty plot by the riverside presented itself as the perfect opportunity for Dave to create a purpose built brewery and bar. With the support of a wonderful developer, the local community and crowd funding, The Port and Eagle came to fruition.Dave & Marilyn were able to contribute towards almost every aspect of the build, designing the interior and leading working groups to paint the internal walls. Together they wanted to create a welcoming and relaxed, but lively atmosphere where all felt welcome. The goal was to build a bar which would show case the craft of brewing Eagle beers, many of which are award winning creations. The ethos would be sustainability with locally sourced produce where possible and reductions in waste in order to preserve New Zealand’s beautiful environment, of which all kiwis take great pride in. The internal décor also incorporates some of the river town’s history, exhibiting the uniqueness of the Kaiapoi township and its location.Much thought has gone into The Port and Eagle’s offerings to ensure that the food and beer compliment the warm atmosphere of the pub, as well as being able to cater to as many dietary needs as possible. The international style beers are matched with an international style menu, with the dishes created lovingly in house from fresh, local ingredients.The Port and Eagle Brewpub was officially opened by the mayor of Waimakariri 1st of March 2019, and the rest is history!
